Mar. 03, 1963 - German Play Creates Controversy All Over The World Accuses Pope Of Not Standing Up to Hitler: The Deputy (or The Representative, or The Vicar) are the various versions for the English translation was written by a 32 year old Protestant Rolf Hochhuth who was a member of the Jungvolk, the Nazi organisation for children. Herr Hochhuth alleges that Pope Pius XII refrained from condemning Nazi persecution of the Jews. He did so, the play claims, because of a Concordat he signed with Germany before the war and fear of a Communist victory. The play was first presented at the Theater am Kurfurstendamm in Berlin - with Karl-Heinz Kellerman in the part of the Pope and Gunter Tabor as Riccardo.
