Scene from play by Peter Weiss, The Investigation

Oct. 10, 1965 - The first performance of Peter Weiss's play Die Ermittlung (The Investigation or The Proceedings), based on the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials, will take place at the same time in the Federal Republic of Germany and in the DDR - on 19 October in Kottbus, Dresden, Erfurt, Leipzig, Alltenburg, Halle, Rootstock, Potsdam, Neutralize (all in East Germany) and East Berlin on the one side, and in West Berlin, Essen, Cologne and Munich on the other side. The defendants real names are used: Adjutant Mulka, Boger, Dr Capesius, etc. The Royal Shakespeare Theatre also presents the play on 19 October in English. Photo shows defendant Adjutant Mulka and his lawyer during rehearsals in Cologne under the direction of Joachim Muhsam. Mulka is played by Gustav Schellhardt
