Sep. 09, 1954 - Statue Placed on the Seabed Jesus Of The Deeps': Sixty divers knelt and prayed sixty feet under the sea in San Fruttuose Bay, near Portofino on the Italian Riviera when an 8-foot high bronze statue known as Jesus of the Deeps was lowered into the sea on a 75-ton base. It is by the Italian sculptor Guido Galletti and it is to serve as a guardian for all who have to do with the sea and as a monument for those who die at sea.
