Oct. 10, 1966 - Pinewood Rocket Goes Into Orbit From Man-Made Volcano - For The Latest James Bond Adventure: The biggest and most complex film interior built in Europe has been erected for the latest James Bond screen adventure You Only Live Twice, currently in production at Pinewood Studios. The set- a giant volcano towering 126 feet high above the balet at Pinewood and spacious enough for a helicopter to fly around inside - links in the film with sequence shot last month at Mt. Shinmos, Japan's largest inactive volcano. It is, says director Lewis Gilbert, the most fantastic, most spectacular and most expensive and ingenious toy Bond has ever been given. Costing 350, 000, the volcano will be fatured in You only Live Twice as the super-modern Japanese headquarters of the criminal syndicate, spectra. It is in the volcano that Bond, portrayed once again by Sean Connery, plays out some of the most thrilling action sequences in the film. In the plot, it appears from the outside to be simply an inactive volcano on the rugged landscape of Southern Japan. In fact, the inside of the volcano has been converted into a fully equipped oriental base for the mancing space age activities of Spectre No.1 man, Ernst Blofield. When the set's sliding roof is rolled back it reveals a 66 rocket (styled on an Atlas missile), a rocket launching pad, a movable helicopter platform, memorial offices, control rooms and a of tunnels.
