Selwyn Lloyd, retires as Speaker of the House of Commons
Feb. 02, 1976 - Selwyn Lloyd speaker of the House of Commons retires tomorrow after four years.: Speaker of the House of Commons, Selwyn Lloyd, 71 retires tomorrow after four years. He has had over thirty years in the Commons and first entered Parliament in 1945 as Tory MP for the Wirral, Cheshire. Since then he has been Minister of Supply, Minister of Defence, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Lord Privy Seal and Leader of the House of Commons. Mr. Lloyd was given a life peerage in the New Year Honours.
