: Senator Joseph McCarthy leaving Federal Court

Senator Joseph McCarthy leaving Federal Court

Sep. 09, 1953 - Senator Joseph McCarthy the American Communist hunter is in New York to question men known to be active in Communist causes. He held a public session at the Federal Court where his investigations sub committee sat. The investigation of Abraham Unger a lawyer who was of the defence council for 11 top Reds who were convicted of violating the Smith Act, was the main business of the day - but as Unger refused to state whether or not he was a Communist, McCarthy ordered a guard to remove him from the session, and said he would file papers citing him for contempt. Unger challenged McCarthy's right to question him on his political beliefs, and did not claim the fifth Amendment as a justification for his refusal to answer. The senator was in an aggravated mood, despite the announcement that he is to marry his former secretary former beauty queen Jean Lee of Washington. Photo shows McCarthy waves and smiles as he left the federal court after the day's session, bound for Washington to see his fiancee
