1953 - Shakespeare's Day Wreath Placed on Statue in Leicester Square. For the first time William Shakespeare's birthday was marked in London today by the placing of a wreath at the statue of the bard in the centre of Leicester Square. Mr Donald Wolfit, the actor, laid the wreath sent by the American National Theatre and Academy. this Anglo American gesture marks the 389th anniversary of Shakepeare's birthday.
