Shaun, Irish wolfhound, retiring as regimental mascot
Sep. 27, 1967 - New Regimental Mascot for the Irish Guards: A 10-month old Irish wolfhound, Fionn, yesterday became the new regimental mascot of the First Batallion Irish Guards, at Pirbright, Surrey. Fionn was taking over from another Irish wolfhound, Shaun, who was being demobilised with full military honours after his full seven years service. Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis, Colonel of the Regiment, was there to give Shaun a pat on the head and say: Goodbye old friend'. Shaun will be retired to Scotland. Photo shows the entire 1st Batallion paraded with Shaun at its head, while the corps of drums played the St Patrick's Day march, at Pirbright, Surrey, yesterday
