Nov. 11, 1957 - Gunman fights Police in four-hour siege. Shirley Bassey held prisoner in Bedroom: At the point of a revolver, the 20 year old black singer, Shirley Bassey was held prisoner by a 19 year old man in barricaded bedroom on the fifith floor of the Cumberland Hotel, Marble Arch, today. Armed police ended the four-hour siege when they overpowered the man and snatched the revolver from his hand. Miss Bassey was in her room approving dresses for her Australian tour on which she was due to leave later today. With her was a friend, Mr. Peter Quinton, and two representatives of a firm of costumiers. A young man burst into the room waving a revolver. Mr. Quinton grappled with the man and a shot was fired. The fight continued and Mr. Quinton was struck on the head. The gunman shouted Get out or you will be hurt, and bundled the three men, Mr. Quinton, his head streaming with blood, out of the room.
