Shirley Bassey, singer, at family home, Tiger Bay, Cardiff

1955, Tiger Bay, Cardiff, Wales: At home with Shirley: SHIRLEY VERONICA BASSEY, 18, by the fireside in her little family home in Cardiff's Tiger Bay. Well known both for her powerful voice and for recording the theme songs to the James Bond films. Born above a brothel in a rough sea port, a tenth child of mixed-race parentage, she should have had no future beyond the streets or factories. She earned 12 dollars a week at a factory. Then she got a job in a touring revue as a singer and was soon noticed and signed up for a lush nite-spot in London. After her first night she was signed up by TV, and followed contracts for stage shows
