Simon Ward to play role of young Winston Churchill
May 05, 1971 - Simon Ward to play Churchill in the Film Young Winston': Simon Ward aged 30 is to play Winston Churchill in the Carlforeman-Richard Attenborough film Young Winston Ward who will portray Churchill between 19 and 27 was one of 400 young British actors auditioned for the part. He joined the National Youth Theatre at 13 and has had considerable experience on stage and television.Simon was tested three times and his final test was in the uniform of a British Cavalry Officer of the 1890s mounted on a grey horse, in a riding stable near Harrow (where Churchill went to school). Bearing in mind Winston Churchill's early prowess as a rider - he was a champion polo player - Simon Ward needed to establish his own horsemanship in view of the scenes in which he will ride into battle with the Cavalry, when the Battle of Omdurman and the Battle of Malakand are restaged for the film. The film costing over 2 million will start to be shot in Wales later this month.
