Oct. 10, 1953 - British Government Acts in British Guiana, The Governor, Sir Alfred Savage Broadcasts. The Colonial Office announced today that the Government have decided to suspend the Constitution of British Guiana. The decision had been taken to prevent Communist subversion of the Government in the Colony and a dangerous crisis. The Communist Clique in power had shown that they are prepared to go to any length including violence, to turn British Guiana into a Communist State. the statement said. The Portfolios of Parliamentary Ministers have been removed, including that of Dr. Cheddi Jagan the Communist Prime Minister and leader of the People's Progressive Party.
