Sir Carol Reed in film studio directing The Key

Sir Carol Reed, producer-director of The Key in which Sophia Loren is starring, explains a point to the technicians at the studios. Sophia Loren As a Foreign Woman In Wartime England: Aylesbury Serves As Location Setting For The Market Of Wartime Naval Town: To wet yet still quaint and historically interesting county market town of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, went the entire movie- making team of director Sir Carol Reed and producer-writer Carl Foreman, making The Key'. With them went the main star of the picture - Italian actress Sophia Loren. Dressed in raincoat and headscarf, she was shot from every angle wandering amongst the stalls. But before the shooting started we got unusual pictures of the star moving around the square, as yet unrecognised by the ordinary Saturday afternoon crowds. As soon as the camera crews appeared, however, the usual decoy and crowd control measures had to be taken and extras dressed as wartime citizens and servicemen on leave appeared. When it rained Sophia took refuge in Tudor Bukl's Head Motel until it stopped. Co-stars William Holden and Trevor Howard were not wanted for this scene - of Sophia, the Swiss-Italian woman in a wartime British naval base town of Westport'. The Story is of gallant rescue tugs operating from Westport in the Western Approaches. Other scenes have been made in Dorset and interiors at Borehamwood studios
