Sir John Barbirolli, conductor, recovering from operation

Sep. 09, 1956 - Sir John Barbirolli recovering from operation.: Sir John Barbirolli, who is in the Royal Infirmary, Manchester, where he had an operation for an intestinal obstruction 12 days ago, has received Get well messages from music lovers all over the world. The 56-year old conductor of the Halle Orchestra hopes to be able to leave hospital next week. Sir John and Lady Barbirolli will take a holiday in Italy, where they will visit his relatives in Venice and friends in Naples. Sir John said yesterday that he did not know when he would be able to resume as conductor of the Halle Orchestra. He has recovered sufficiently to do a certain amount of work sitting up in bed - this included a study of musical scores. Photo shows Sir John Barbirolli, pictured in hospital yesterday, preparing for the coming season. His wife Evelyn Rothwell, oboist, is seated beside him
