Mar. 31 British Ambassador Makes New Year American Broadcast. Sir Roger Makins, British Ambassador to the United States, made a 12 minutes New Year's Day broadcast from his study in the British Embassy, Washington, in ABC's Metropolitan Opera Programme. He spoke of the very happy memories he and his family had of the many places they had visited in America and especially of the people they had met everywhere. He expressed his confidence in the future of America and Britain linked in Friendship; and he discounted talk of rifts between the two countries. He pointed to progress along the road to peace in 1954 by discussion and negotiation not to be confused with appeasement or peace at any price'; he emphasised the growing economic and military strength of the West.
