Jan. 01, 1965 - 1-1-65 Britain's King of soccer becomes Sir Stanley Matthews in the New Year's Honours list It's a happy New Year for Stanley Matthews, the world's best known footballer, still playing for Stoke City in his 50th year, who now becomes Sir Stanley Matthews in the Prime Minister's first full honours list. The wizard of the wing, who played for England 84 times, will be up at dawn as usual for a training run on the sands near his Blackpool home. He regards complete fitness as part of his contract. Stanley was awarded the C.B.E. in 1957, and is the first professional footballer to be knighted.
