Jul. 07, 1954 - Sir Thomas Dugdale resigns, gives up post to avert government defeat : Sir Thomas Dugdale announced his resignation yesterday in the House of Commons - from the post of minister of agriculture to avert the defeat of the government when it was learned that about 40 Tory backbenchers were prepared not to vote if the opposition challenged the government following the strew over chisel down - the land that was requisitioned as a bombing range by the air ministry during the war - and after the ministry had finished with it the land was passed on to the ministry of agriculture instead of being offered back to the original owner (Mrs. Mary Marten) who inherited it from her father Lord Arlington
