Sir Winston Churchill schooner flooded, Southampton
Jan. 01, 1967 - The Schooner Sir Winston Churchill is flooded; The sail training school Sir WInston Churchill, was flooded by the rising tide at her berth in Southamption yesterday. Experts believed that an insecure porthole near the water line caused the flooding. The open porthole was discovered as divers and firemen worked throughout the day to trace the leak before the schooner was flooded again by the next high tide. After the porthole was closed, firemen were able to pump out some of hte water which had flooded into the ship and given her a heavy lit as she settle on a mudbank. No permanent damaged was done, and the Sir Winston Churchill will be able to leave the yard on schedule to fulfill her 1967 program of cruises. The schooner is undergoing its first big overhaul after a season of cruises for the sail training Association.
