Skid Row soft ground arrester tested at Farnborough
Aug. 08, 1966 - Test Pilots call it Skid Row, Farnborough's scientists have another name for it; an aircraft soft ground arrester. It is a simple idea that may put an end to the pilot's greatest nightmare - overshooting on takeoff and landing. Skid Row is a 400 yard long pit filled with ordinary pebbles at the end of a runway. If a plane overshoots, the pebbles slow it down safely and comfortably. And to prove it works, test pilot John Ayers gave an 80 mph demonstration in a supersonic Lightning, at Farnborough's research establishment yesterday.
