Jan. 01, 1956 - Highland Light Infantry Leaves For Cyprus. He Was To Have married On Saturday - Mother Stopped Ceremony. The 1st Battalion Highland Light Infantry left Blackbushe Airport - Hants - for Cyprus - to help in the battle against the terrorists. Keystone Photo Shows:- Cpl. John Woodcock posts a letter to his fiancee - Miss Elizabeth Patterson - when he left Blackbushe. Cpl. Woodcock was to have married Miss Patterson at Salisbury - but his mother dashed by car from Birmingham to stop the wedding - as she said he was already engaged to another girl - Miss Betty Campbell, of Lanarkshire, Scotland
