Starving peasants demonstrate in Calcutta, India
May 05, 1958 - Indian Food marchers rounded up. Starving peasants in Calcutta: Destitute Indian peasants, who have trekked over 100 miles from their homes are rounded up by police as they hold a demonstration in Calcutta, against the Government's food policy. Some 650 demonstrators, including women and children, were arrested in the demonstrations recently held. The peasants, totalling 1, 000, had marched into Calcutta from rural areas suffering from acute food and water shortage, to demand government relief. There have been crop failures for the past three years and the peasants are in a pitiful condition with no money left for rice, the price of which has sky-rocketed
