Dec. 12, 1955 - The world's biggest tanker launched. Mr. Stavros Niarchos after the ceremony.: The world's biggest oil tanker the Spyroc Niarchos (47, 500) was launched on Friday at the Vickers- Armstrong Yard Barrow-in-Furness by Lady Weeks wife of Generla Sir Ronald weeks. This is the largest merchant ship built in Britian since the Queen Elizabeth and is named after the eight year old son of Mr. Stavros Niarchos the young Greek who controls the world's biggest independent tanker fleet. The new vessel is 757ft long and can carry 14 million gallons of crude oil.
