Apr. 17 A Pumpkin pregnant with possibilities; Stephen Hobday is hoping that his giant pumpkin could turn into a golden carriage for his fortunes. Although its size hasn't broken a record yet, it's his method of cultivation which makes the pumpkin unique. For years Mr. Hobday, from Deal, Kent, has played music to his pumpkins via a transistor earpiece with great success. If cows yield more milk listening to music, he argues, why shouldn't pumpkins thrive too? Last year Mr Hobday tried a new tactic in addition to the music. Having found some hormone pills on a local tip, the sort used to increase fertility in women, he decided to feed his pumpkin a solution of the drug to see what it would do for its fertility. At the end of the season he was pleased to discover the pumpkin had produced around 1, 300 seeds, double the usual number. This year he's carried the experiment a step further, injecting an extract made by boiling the seeds into the stalk of the pumpkin - grown from one of last year's seeds - with a hypodermic syringe. Now Mr. Hobday believes the extract could have a beneficial effect upon infertile women. He's drunk it himself to prove its isn't toxic and he's now looking for twelve volunteer women with a fertility problem to see if it can help them.
