Jan. 01, 1961 - Councillors Talk All Night Over Stepney Slums. Houses Used For Prostitution Claim. The London County Council this morning ended an all-night sitting with bitter wrangle over slum property - owned by the Council - in Stepney. The Tory Opposition leader Sir Percy Rugg introduced a motion censuring the council for allowing prostitution in houses in Sander Street Stepney, which he claimed were owned by the council. Now the houses are being demolished, and this is the culmination of six years campaign by the Rev. Joe Williamson - who claims that he has never seen anything so ruby rotten as the square mile in his Parish'. Father Joe says he is now afraid that prostitutes will move into other local slum property. He says the problem will only be finished when all the slum property is destroyed.
