Steve Winwood of the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic

1967 - Steve Winwood 19 year old lead singer who also plays the organ and guitar. Born: Kingstanding, Brimingham. Educated at Great Bar Comprehensive School, but kicked out at 16 because they said I was creating a bad impression. While still at school, he used to play to guitar in a folk group and piano in a jazz band. He met Spencer Davis while in the jazz band, and for a while before he left school he played in the Spencer Davis Group. On leaving school he joined the group permanently as singer, guitarist and harmonica player. He quickly became the star of the group and his success and popularity with Spencer Davis has been carried over to Traffic where his is undoubtedly the big attraction. He left Spencer Davis in April 1967 when the group split up, rented a cottage in Berkshire - for about 2 a week - and this is where Traffic got together
