Student disruption of Gordon Walker lecture, Manchester Univ

Mar. 03, 1968 - Students sweep away barriers: Glyn Carver, 19, of Derby, one of the two Manchester University students suspended for preventing a lecture by Mr Gordon Walker, Education minister, last Friday week, addressing students during a three-hour sit-in at the University yesterday. The other suspended student Andrew Hornung 23, of Cardiff also took part. A table barricade was swept aside and a porter knocked over as 150 students, many of them left-wing, stormed into the main building to protest over the suspension of the two students. Once inside the block they forced their way up from the basement and up two flights of stairs before being halted by another hastily-erected barrier only 20 yards from the office of Prof. Sir William Mansfield Cooper, the Vice-Chancellor. Mr. Vincent Knowles, the Registrar, said that suspension meant the two students were barred from lectures and from University building
