May 05, 1960 - Seven Reported Dead In Istanbul Riots. Students Demonstrate Against Turkish Government. Martial Law was declared in the city of Istanbul after reports that seven students were killed during demonstrations against the Government of Mr. Menderes. The disorder broke out when students demonstrated against a Bill, approved by the National Assembly - which gives the Assembly investigation committee the rights of judges and military judicial authorities. Acting against decisions of the Assembly is now punishable by law.
