Feb. 29 Sephardic Jews in Turkey: Sultan Abdulmecit. In 1839 the reforming Sultan Abdulmecit issued the Tanzimat, an organic statute for governing the Ottoman Empire. After listing the rights guaranteed his people he specified: These imperial concessions extend to all our subjects, whatever religion or sect they may belong to; and they will enjoy them without exception. This had the effect among the Sephardim of Turkey and the empire, of strengthening their culture and the use of their Spanish language
