Suspect of Towpath Murders, Richmond Magistrates Court

Aug. 08, 1953 - Man accused of Towpath Murders appears at Richmond Magistrates Court. Alfred Charles Whiteway, 22-year-old labourer, of Sydney Street, Teddington, appeared at Richmond Magistrates Court this morning, charged with the murder of 16-year-old Barbara Songhurst and 18-year old Christine Reed. The girls are said to have been attacked on May 31. Barbara's mutilated body was recovered from the Thames near Teddington Lock on Coronation eve, and Christine Reed was found in the river some days later. Photo shows Alfred Charles Whiteway, the accused man, covered up as he left the magistrates court with a police escort this morning
