Sep. 23, 1955 - Florence Chadwick Attempts Two-Way Channel Swim: With a thunderstorm in the Channel, Miss Florence Chadwick, the 35-year-old Californian set off early today on an England to France and back non-stop swim. She is the only woman to have beaten the Channel in both directions - from France in 1950 and from England in 1953. She also hopes to beat the England to France official record of 14 hours 6 minutes set up by Bloxwich baths manager Bill Pickering.
