Aug. 08, 1964 - 14-Year-old Californian schoolgirl to attempt to swim the English channel: Yesterday's cold, grey English Channel failed to daunt 14-year-old Leonora Modell who has come from sunny California to swim it. She was picked as a guinea pig for a scientific experiment designed to build stamina and energy. Mr. Paul Herron, her coach, who has swum the Channel both ways, said she was picked for the test because she was the poorest swimmer in her class, now she holds several swimming records.
