Aug. 08, 1965 - Australian girl in customs row after swimming the channel.: Customs officers were today reporting 19-year-old Australian swim girl Linda McGill- who landed at dawn near Dover after swimming the Channel - for failing to wait for clearance from them. Linda, first Australian to conquer the Channel and this first woman this year, took 11 hours, 12 minutes, only 11 minutes outside the record set by Greta Andersen of America in 1958. Linda did not wait for customs clearance after being taken to Dover be her escort boat. Linda, daughter of a Sydney Policeman, is banned for four years from competitive swimming for alleged indiscipline at the Tokyo Olympics. She worked as a barmaid to pay the cost of her Channel swim.
