Terrier sniffs at stuffed Great Auk, London
Sep. 21, 1977 - Great AUK for sale at Sotheby's Belgravia: A very rare example of the extinct bird in the Great Auk was sold today at Sotheby's for ?4, 200. The last live recorded Great Auks in Britain were at Country Waterford in 1834 and St. Kilda around 1840. The bird was finally exterminated on Eldey, Iceland, in 1844. This specimen was offered for auction by the University of Durham who have owned it since 1834. Photo shows Rusty the terrier seems puzzled by the Great Auk when they met outside Sotheby's auction rooms in Belgravia this morning
