Thomas Mann with widow of Gerhart Hauptmann

Dec. 14 25h Anniversary of the Death of Thomas Mann: On June 6th 1875 Thomas Mann was born in Lubeck as the son of a wealthy corn-dealer and senator. After the death of his father Thomas Mann went to Munich in 1893, where he became improver at an insurance company and at the same time co-worker of the Simplicissimus'. Together with his brother Heinrich Mann, who also was a writer, he travelled through Italy from 1895 to 1897. 1899 he became sub-editor of the Simplicissimus (a very famous satirical magazine), shortly after this independent writer. From 1914 to 1933 he lived in Munich. in 1933 he emigrated to Kussnacht at the Zurichsee Switzerland and in 1939 to USA. There he first was guest-professor in Princeton, later he lived in Pacific Palisades. 1944 he took the American national status. After the war he visited Germany more than once. and in 1952 he took his place of residence in Kilchberg near Zurich. There he died at August 12th, 1955. 1920 Thomas Mann had received the Nobel Prize of Literature for his first big novel Buddenbrooks'.
