Tommy Steele in a boat on the River Thames

Feb. 29 Tommy Learns His Lines For First Big Stage Musical... The Boy From Bermondsey To Star In H.G. Wells Kipps': Tousled blonde hair, a grin that splits his face in two, and more than a fair share of talent, pure and simple this is Tommy Steele, the boy from Bermondsey who rose, bejeaned, on thick crepe soles, to the twang of a guitar and the screams of hysterical fans. Within four months of his show-business debut he rocked to the top of the hit parade, and since then he has starred in cabaret, in films, ontelevision, toured, performed before the Queen and appeared, straight, at Old Vic. Today Tommy Steele is no longer a teenage idol, his recent release, Hit Record, was his first disc for a year. But he has developed, he's learned to dance, to tell jokes, to do impersonations, to act, and to be an entertainer. He is to star in his first big stage musical, a version of H.G. Wells Kipps, for which he is busy learning his lines, and to play the banjo... Married to an ex-dancer who gave up her career to be Mrs. Tommy Steele, he now lives in a converted coach house by the Thames at Teddington, Middlesex. Here he and his wife Ann escape the ballyhoo of Tommy's profession, where no photographers are allowed. But Tommy still has his roots in Bermondsey - in his garden he has a gas-lamp from the street, now demolished, where he used to live.... The Skipper - Tommy keeps a weather eye open before setting sail down river from his Teddington home mooring
