Tony Blackburn, DJ, to host TV programme, New Release

Dec. 12, 1967 - Poll-topping DJ hosts New Southern TV Pop Stars.: Poll-topping disc-jockey Tony Blackburn hits New Release, a new Southern ITV network pop music series beginning a 13-week run on Friday, Jan. 15th 1968 at 7:00 pm. Each Friday, British record buyers are confronted with a choice of about 30 new disc releases. New release presents the best of these newly-pressed pop singles, performed by the artists who make them. The performers also form a panel to discuss the hit potential and artistic value of each other's recordings. We aim to present the first public airing of the best of the new releases in any given week, says director Mike Mansfield. Six artists will appear in each other's show. The Tremeloes and Herman's Hermits are already signed for the first edition. Viewers will also be invited to give their verdict on the discs featured. We want people to try and predict the Top Thirty placings of each disc two weeks after they are released. says Mansfield. The winners will get LP prizes. A special instrument theme for the show - titled The Margarine Flavoured Pineapple Chunk - has been composed by Bournemouth pop singer Anita Harris. A GES single recording of this theme - by the Alan Tew Orchestra - will be released on the day of the first programme in the series transmitted
