Toru Kamiya uses vegetable as musical instrument

Sep. 09, 1974 - New Musical Sounds From Vegetables: Toru Kamiya, a 24-year-old graduate of a Tokyo school of music, his wife and their friend Miss Katuko Yoshida, have formed a musical trio, and their musical instruments are vegetables- carrots, radishes, lotus-roots, and pumpkins. The idea is to create new sounds and tones that have never been heard before, indeed it makes the music of Beethoven and Bach somewhat different. Kamiya prefers to play the lotus- root, or blow into a pumpkin, while his wife makes sounds on a white radish in which holes have been made like a clarinet. Miss Yoshida accompanies them on a carrot. Thus new sounds have been born in Japan, and with the present high prices of vegetables, housewives may have to guard their purchases from being turned into musical instruments, on the other hand the instruments can be cooked after a concert has ended.
