Oct. 15, 1954 - Famous Athletes Start Off In London To Newcastle Relay Run. In Aid Of Infantile Paralysis Fellowship: Many world famous athletes are taking part in the London to Newcastle 300 mile relay run - in aid of the Infantile Paralysis Fellowship. It is all part of the King's College, Newcastle Rag Week. Students and athletes will cover the 300 miles in four daily ten mile relays- taking nine days in all. When not running the athletes will travel in an ancient taxi-cab which also contains collecting boxes. It is hoped that 5 per mile. Photo shows Stage and T.V. star Gilbert Harding hands over a letter and cheque from the Lord Mayor of London to Gordon Pirie at the start from the Achilles Status. Hyde Park Corner today.
