Feb. 02, 1957 - Betty Cuthbert Sets Up New Australian Record In Sensational 220 Yard Event In Sydney. Australia's Betty Cuthbert set a new Australian record of 23.9 secs in the 220 Yards - women's event during a sports meeting at the Sydney Stadium recently. The race was sensation in as much as Olympic sprinter Marlene Mathews fell heavily five yards from the finishing line. Her momentum carried Marlene over the line - but she was disqualified from second place as an official helped her on the finishing line. Second place was taken by Fleur Mellor with Erica Willis third.
