Feb. 26 Frances for the high jump.: She's won her gamble. Pretty 23-year-old brunette Frances Sleap gave up her biology teaching job a t Loretto College, St. Albans last term hoping to be chosen as high jumper for the Olympic team.And she's made it. Frances, an all-rounder sho sprints, hurdles and long jumps too for the Ruislip Northwood AC won the AA women title at the White City in June with a lea of 5'8 - two inches more than the runner-up Linda Knowles - and took the indoor championships at Wembley with 5'7'. Her best indoor leap to date is 5'9'. At the Olympics she'll be aiming at 5'10 - or more. And the best women's height ever is 5'10 1/2'. Frances Slaap (her name means sleep but there's nothing sleepy about her) is of Dutch origin. Her parents came over from Anersfort near Utrecht in 1934 but she was born in Perivale Middlesex. Her mother was an athletics fan, her father a soccer player or the Bussum town team - and Frances is carrying on the family tradition - and how. Training is going to take up most of her spare time in the nest few weeks ( trainer is Fred Houfden from Ewell) and then it's hey for Tokyo. Off to train - and fame.Frances is going to soar muel higher than this on her trip to Tokyo
