Mar. 03, 1960 - New World Record Set Up in the New South Wales Women's Athletic Championships In windy and bleak conditions, Australian Olympic gold medalist, Betty Cuthbert, set up a new 60 metres world record time of 7.2 secs. thus clipping one second off Poland's Stella Walsh's world time of 7.3 secs, set up in 1933. In setting up the new record Betty scored a victory over Marlene Mathews who followed close on her heels. But later Marlene avenged this defeat by beating Betty into first place in the 100 yards invitation race.
