Jun. 06, 1966 - Young Japanese runner wins the 5, 000 metres at Crystal Palace - he beats the famous Ron Clarke.: The big surprise of the evening sports meeting at Crystal Palace last night came in the 5, 000 metre invitation race, when Ron Clarke, of Australia, described as the greatest distance runner in the world, was beaten into fourth place. He was outrun over the final lap by a tiny 22 year old Japanese runner K. Sawaki, whose time of 13 min. 36 secs. broke the United Kingdom all-comers and Japanese records. Photo shows Japanese runner Sawaki is seen winning the 5, 000 metres race as he breasts the tape in front of Mohammed Gamouldi, the Tunisian Olympic silver medallist
