May 05, 1968 - The Opening of the Tartan All-Weather surface track at the Crystal Palace recreation centre: Mr. Denis Howell, Minister for sport, was present when an inter-club track meeting was held on the Tartan all-weather surface track at the National Recreation Centre at Crystal Palace today. The eight lane, 400 metre track. Laid at a cost of £67, 400, is the first in Europe, and a similar surface to that on which the Olympic track events will be run at Mexico City.
