Jul. 07, 1971 - Surprise Winner: London: The biggest surprise of the A.A.A. Championships at Crystal Palace this afternoon was Michael Baxter's victory in the 5, 000 Metres event. This was the race that European record-holder David Bedford was going to use to break Australian Ron Clarke's 5, 000 metres record. Bedford, 21, seem set to do just that when four laps from home be hopped off the track with a strained hamstring. Baxter of Leeds City Athletic Club then fought out the finish with three others
