Trainspotters who saw crash
Aug. 24, 1963 - Spotter Boys Say They Saw Crash - Two Teenage Train Spotters told a Crash Enquiry Yesterday how they saw a signal at danger as an 80 mph Pullman express rerared towards a station with a line of freight vans standing in its way. The Western Queen Express, brakes Full on, Could not stop in time and it ploughed in the vans at 20 mph. Three footplatemen on the Pullman were killed. The boys, 14, of Coventry, and Paul Sliwinski, also of Coventry, aged 14, told the Ministry of Transport enquiry at Birmingham that the express rounded the bend in the station at nearly 40 mph.
