Trebechovice Nativity, carved from wood, Prague

Nov. 11, 1969 - A Nativity At Prague Castle: The Trebechovice Nativity, one of the most precious pieces of Bohemian folk art of last century, which was so much admired at the World Exhibition in Montreal in 1967 and in the Madurodam mini town in The Hague, Holland, in the summer 1968, is again resplendent in its original beauty. For a full ten weeks Academic sculptor, Frantisek Bartos spent cleaning, preserving and repairing the two thousand little carved figures the moveable subjects and the wooden mechanism which were the result of forty years work by peasant Josef Probost and the folk-wood-carver Josef Kapucian, both from the Trebechovice pod Orebem village in North-Eastern Bohemia. The masterpiece will be exhibited at Prague Castle in the Piecnik Hall until Jan 4th. The organisers of the Ideal Home Exhibition in London are interested in borrowing the Nativity for the April exhibition next year.
