Mar. 03, 1966 - The Trial Of The Pyx In The City: Churchill crowns are among the British and Commonwealth Currency put on trial at Goldsmiths Hall in the City of London, today. Called the Trial of the Pyx, this centuries Old Procedure is carried out each year, independently of the Royal Mint, to ensure that gold, silver and cupro-0nickel coins of Imperial currency are of proper weight and fineness. This year, the jury - made up of twelve discreet and lawful citizens of London with twelves Skilful Goldsmiths of the same place - will try silver coins of H.M. Maundy money and cupro-nickel coins in daily use, including Churchill crowns. And at the request of the New Zealand Government cupro-nickel coins produced by the mint for use in that country will be stested. The examination, which is presided over by the Queen's Remembrancer, Master basil Harwood, lasts for more than two months. During that time exhaustive tests are carried out by the Assay office of Goldsmith's Hall and the verdict is delivered on Wednesday, May 11 in the presence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer.Photo Shows The Queen's Remembrancer, Master Basil Harwood after Swearing in the jury, leaves the Chamber for the trial
