UNA appeal for postwar integration of refugees, Germany

Sep. 09, 1956 - The Shocking Stories Of Europe's Non-German Refugees The United Nations Association is launching a nationwide appeal for funds to be used to provide better permanent homes, living conditions, and education for Europe's non-German refugees. There are hundreds of thousands of embattled, helpless beings, who exist without hope and with nothing they can sell their own, condemned to live as outsiders in the refugee camps in Western Germany. Every day hundreds of babies are born in the camps of the hopeless. Some children have lived for ten years without ever stepping inside a real house. The middle-aged and the elderly are doomed anyway. Most of them are remnants of the slave camps. Photo Shows:- This is 14-months old Maria, who lies in a ramshackle cot in the corner of a tiny room in what was once a Luftwaffe barracks at Marienfelde, 400 yards from the barbed-wire frontier of the Russian Zone. She was born in her makeshift cot, just one of the many in the camps
