Jun. 06, 1961 - Fifty Thousand Jobs - Now In Danger. Leader And Strikers At Smiths Accessories; The unofficial stoppage by 2, 000 workers at the Smiths Motor Accessories factory at Cricklewood - now threatens 50, 000 jobs in the Midlands Car Factories. The Car manufacturing companies which obtain speedometers - gauges etc. for their cars from Smiths - say that the situation is very grave'. The strikers at Smiths held a meeting yesterday - and in spots of calls from the Union leaders -and from Mrs. Emily Garvey - one of the strike leaders to return to work - a vote was taken - and the strike continues. The strike -which arises from a pay claim has been on for two weeks. Some of the car firms are at stockpiling their new cars - which are completed with the inception of the instrument panels. They say that this stockpiling - cannot go on for more than a few days. The Companies affected include - BMC - (Morris-Austin-Riley-Wolesley etc), Jaguars -standards and the Rootes group.
