1963 - Tourism Stirs On Statia: St. Eustatius, N.A. This Dutch island in the Carribean, familiarly known as Statia, is headed for a renaissance. Work is nearing completion on a new resort hotel and on a restoration project with cottage facilities. Four additional projects are in various stages of planning. To aid in the overall development, the islands airport is being expanded and a landing wharf has been constructed to handle heavy equipment. The possibility of future deep water pier facilities is also under consideration. For residents of Statia, all this sudden activity has raised hopes that the island is on the eve of regaining her former glory which earned her the label Golden Rock. Once the prosperous hub of Caribbean trade, Statia was seized and sacked in 1781 by British Admiral Rodney in late retaliation for a salute by the Dutch to American independence.
